Joseph S. Stockton was born in Princeton, NJ in 1844. His parents, brothers, and he moved to Illinois around 1861. I believe he was not truthful about his age when he joined the Union Army, but according to his military records, he was born in 1843, which he was not. He  enlisted in August 1862 and was mustered in September 1862 in Winfield, IL. His muster regiment was the 105th Infantry. On July 20, 1864, he was wounded at the battle of Peach Tree Creek in GA. He was mustered out on June 7, 1865. According to family stories, he would say that he was wounded in the arm, and he pulled the bullet out with his teeth. Whether it was true or not, who knows? It made a good story. Submitted by Susan Stockton Gastrock
