One of our Tent members who lives in England recently went to London for the first time since February 2020 and laid a wreath on behalf of our Tent at the Lincoln Monument that was erected in July 1920. This monument became a focal point for the remaining London-based Civil War Veterans.

In our October 22, 2022 meeting, a motion was made by Margaret Stromberg. This led to our unanimous vote for giving a generous donation in alliance with the SUVCW for the completion of a monument for UK Veterans of the American Civil War Association. It’ll be installed in London, UK. This exemplifies our dedication in keeping green the memory.

Our UK sister Gina Denham discovered that her great-great grandfather George Denham (Co F 111th PA Volunteers) returned to England after the Civil War. He was one of the small number of other Veterans who made the same decision. Most died in poverty, without any burial marker.

Gina’s discovery led to “The Monumental Project.“ Efforts by volunteers including co-chair Darren Rawlings obtaining burial markers for James O’Neill, Co K 61st MA, and James Albermar, Co E 111th PA, from the Department of Veteran Affairs are their recent successes.

Another goal was to design and fund a symbolic monument in London, honoring those who served and those who supported the Union effort. The monument, designed by PDC Stuart Stefany of the Illinois SUVCW, has already been crafted. Contact President Karen Lyddane, Elizabeth Van Lew Detached Tent 1 ([email protected]) to help complete this project. In alliance with the SUVCW, we are keeping green the memory in a most unique way!

Rededication and Wreath Laying Ceremony Honors Field of Lost Shoes

5/22/2022

The rededication of the monument to the Pennsylvania 54th Volunteer Infantry and wreath laying ceremony were held on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at the New Market Battlefield where the storied Field of Lost Shoes took place. The Elizabeth Van Lew Detached Tent (chapter) 1, of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War,1861-1865 (DUVCW), had awarded a grant to the Virginia Museum of the Civil War to restore the monument’s finials and added an ADA-compliant pathway for accessibility to the monument. Some improvements are still in process. The rededication took place on the same date as the original day of the battle in 1864.

Pictured leading the wreath laying procession are (l to r): President Karen Lyddane of the Elizabeth Van Lew Detached Tent 1, and Field Commander Captain Chris Baran of Company A, 54th Pennsylvania re-enactors, who are followed by descendants of the original 54th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The second attached photo is of the salutary volley by the Company A of the 54th Pennsylvania re-enactors which closed the ceremony.

“We are pleased we could assist in the restoration of the Pennsylvania Monument,” said Tent President Karen Lyddane, “and we look forward to the final completion.” At the ceremony also Ms. Lyddane represented the 12th West Virginia Regiment, and Chaplain Jan Speare represented the 1st West Virginia which both had fought with the 54th in the battle.
