This led to our unanimous vote for giving a generous donation in alliance with the SUVCW for the completion of a monument for UK Veterans of the American Civil War Association. It’ll be installed in London, UK. This exemplifies our dedication in keeping green the memory.
Our UK sister Gina Denham discovered that her great-great grandfather George Denham (Co F 111th PA Volunteers) returned to England after the Civil War. He was one of the small number of other Veterans who made the same decision. Most died in poverty, without any burial marker.
Gina’s discovery led to “The Monumental Project.“ Efforts by volunteers including co-chair Darren Rawlings obtaining burial markers for James O’Neill, Co K 61st MA, and James Albermar, Co E 111th PA, from the Department of Veteran Affairs are their recent successes.
Another goal was to design and fund a symbolic monument in London, honoring those who served and those who supported the Union effort. The monument, designed by PDC Stuart Stefany of the Illinois SUVCW, has already been crafted.
